Job Summary:
The Cost Estimator for New Projects is responsible for developing and analyzing cost estimates for new automotive components, assemblies, and programs during the quotation and launch phases. This role supports the program management, engineering, and purchasing teams by providing accurate cost models and financial input for customer quotations, supplier negotiations, and internal decision-making.
Review customer RFQs (Requests for Quotation), drawings, CAD data, and specifications to prepare detailed cost breakdowns for new products and tooling.
Develop cost models for materials, labor, machine time, tooling, packaging, logistics, and overhead.
Coordinate with engineering, process, purchasing, and manufacturing teams to define feasible production methods and associated costs.
Support the quotation process by preparing cost summaries, profit analysis, and price proposals.
Evaluate supplier quotations for raw materials, purchased components, and tooling to ensure cost competitiveness.
Identify cost drivers and opportunities for value engineering or process optimization.
Maintain cost data libraries and ensure accuracy of standard rates (labor, machine, overhead).
Support program launches by tracking cost evolution from prototype to SOP (Start of Production).
Participate in cost reviews with management and provide cost impact analysis for design or process changes (ECNs).
Support financial forecasts and target cost initiatives to achieve program profitability goals.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Finance, or Business Administration.
Experience: 3–7 years of experience in cost estimation, quoting, or financial analysis in automotive manufacturing (Tier 1 or Tier 2 supplier preferred).
Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of automotive manufacturing processes (e.g., stamping, machining, welding, injection molding, motor assembly).
Tools: Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, SAP, and costing tools.
Documentation: Experience interpreting engineering drawings and BOMs (Bill of Materials).
Soft Skills: Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and teamwork abilities across departments.
Experience in RFQ and quotation management for OEM or Tier 1 customers.
Knowledge of cost modeling techniques (e.g., activity-based costing, process cost modeling).
Familiarity with APQP, PPAP, and Launch Readiness processes.
Basic understanding of financial metrics (ROI, margin, contribution analysis).
Experience working with OEM portals is a plus.
